Indian River High School Reviews

5/5 Rating - Posted November 1, 2014
Indian River High School has only had positive effects on me as a person, as a student, and as a rising adult. This school's teaching staff is highly dedicated, to say the least. Central, I believe, to what makes this school among the highest caliber is that it mirrors the real world. It not only teaches one how to take a standardized test, but how to live in an unpredictible and complex world. Students at this school almost always have a desire to learn. This school not only appreciates originality, but also encourages it. I have never felt prosecuted for the person that I am and anyone here will be able to tell you the same thing. Coming from Greenbrier Middle School, I was accostomed to a controlling, limiting environment. Upon the first few days as a freshmen at this school I realized that the student body and teachers were open to helping me, whether it was with helping me understand a math lesson or with helping me with a private matter. I feel lucky to go to this school. Many of my friends from my middle school went to Oscar Smith and constantly tell me about how unfortunate they feel to be there. As for me, I feel blessed to be a Brave. Never have I felt so lucky.

Indian River is the most terrible high school in chesapeake! Literally!!! My daughter went to Indian River for her freshman year and she came home crying everyday. I finally transferred her to Oscar smith and she is now a rising junior! She loves it there!!!! If you are a parent looking for a high school go check out OSCAR SMITH HIGH SCHOOL!!!!!

Indian River is a fantastic high school with a dedicated teaching staff. I had a child graduate from there in 2008 & I currently have a freshman enrolled there. The sports and orchestra programs are terrific at Indian River and the students get a chance to stay active and form great friendships. We love Indian River high school. Go Braves!!!

I miss that school. Let's Go Braves! It was much better than King's Fork High School where there is more of a strict and stiff atmosphere.

To say the least, Indian River is blessed with a diversely populated student body, eclipsing several social and ethnic types; as a result, students are exposed to a socially nuanced atmosphere, a great plus to life after high school and college.

I have had 2 sons attend Indian River High School . I have to say that Mr. Frye the principle is one of the most involved leaders I have ever seen . He is never too busy to talk to a student or parent. His staff will work as hard as possible to assist a student who seeks help. Both of my sons , one graduated in 2006 ranked 16th in his class, and my youngers is now a senior ranked 10 th in his class. I have to say Indian River High School is the best school in Chesapeake , warm, friendly , diverse and the best staff of teachers in the city

We've had 2 sons graduate from IRHS and have a daughter currently attending. If your children are motivated, they will have an opportunity to get a good education. The building is old but the teachers are generally dedicated and interested. In sports, IRHS usually ranks in the middle of the Chesapeake pack but sometimes breaks out and surprises the big dogs.

I'm not actually a parent but a student. Indian River high school is an excellent start to a better future. The principal (Mr. Frye) is amazing and stays in touch w his students. When a student is having a hard time there is a teacher around every corner eager to help you. Not only are the teachers excellent but the teaching is excellent as well.

Since 2003, our test scores have increased substantially. This, coupled with the exceptional leadership of the principal and the caring, competent staff, make Indian River one of Chesapeake's better high schools. The diverse population of both the student body and the staff encourage tolerance and lends itself to a safe environment. I am extremely proud of this school and its accomplishments. It needs a good refurbishing of sorts, but the school has a warm and caring staff.

This is a great school. My son graduated last year and my daughter is currently attending. Fully accredited--one of the better schools in the Hampton Roads area. Diverse student and teacher population. Involved and caring teachers and parents. Principal exerts good leadership. All of this makes for a balanced environment that is not overly competitive but does motivate the student to achieve.
